Why Enable User Registration on Your Website?

Running a website is relatively straightforward. You come up with compelling content and publish it, your readers read it and you both engage in a conversation about it.

So far, so straightforward.

So why complicate things by allowing users to register and access parts of your website they wouldn’t otherwise be able to see?

There are a few very good reasons why accepting registrations can benefit a website.

Lead generation – Registrations are one way to capture user data to use for lead generation. If you’re planning to monetize your website in any way, this can be an important part of that.

Accept user-generated content – Registration enabled you to accept user content in relative safety. We all know what happens when you allow the general public to say what they want, how they want. Requiring registration can (potentially) avoid the worst of that.

Turns your website into a membership website – Whether you want to provide subscriptions to access premium content, build your own Learning Management System (LMS) or feature subscriber areas for interaction, you will need some form of registration to keep non-subscribers out.

Those are just three ways user registration can benefit a website. We’re sure you can come up with more!

Why You Should Use a WordPress Registration Plugin

The basic WordPress registration options are just that. Basic. WordPress uses the same form design you get to see when you log in using /wp-admin and lands you at a very basic login page. That’s it.

There is no option to manage membership or user levels. No way to collect user details, no way to provide access to certain areas of your website and few tools to control how users interact with your website aside from the basic Subscriber/Admin tools.

If you want more, you need a WordPress registration plugin.

A good WordPress registration plugin will provide:

  • Customizable login pages with optional data fields to help collect user data
  • An organized way to manage users and user levels within your website
  • Options for conditional logic for intelligent forms that react to user input
  • Logical roles for websites that accept user submissions
  • The opportunity to accept payment for subscriptions or access

WordPress registration plugins are vital if you want to provide a more interactive and more premium experience to your users. They are even more important if you plan to charge for access!

What to Look for in a WordPress Registration Plugin?

To be in our list of the best WordPress registration plugins, a plugin has to be well coded, cause few compatibility issues, work with all current versions of WordPress and have no known security vulnerabilities.

A good WordPress registration plugin will also have one or more of the following:

  • The ability to create as many forms as required
  • Tools to design custom forms
  • Support multiple user levels
  • Allows the use of custom fields within forms
  • Offer the option to log in via social media
  • Supports biographies, avatars and social linking
  • Works with any of the major payment gateways

If the plugin does one or more of those, it’s worth checking out.

11 Best WordPress Registration Plugins

If you’re in the market for a WordPress registration plugin, one of these contenders could be just what you need. Each contains one or more of the features listed above.

1. WPForms

WPForms is one of the best-known form plugins for WordPress. It can do much more than registration forms but delivers on that too. It’s a premium plugin that is capable of a lot, including using conditional logic, working with payment gateways, using custom fields and a whole lot more.

WPForms uses a drag and drop page builder to help create forms and has a large library of predefined forms that cover most situations. There are a lot of features to learn but the layout is logical and the plugin has been designed with usability in mind.

We think WPForms could be ideal for WordPress beginners and for those building their first membership site. It begins modestly but can quickly be scaled up to deliver a more upscale experience for users.

    Hi,
It is possible to design multi step registration form with WPForms plugin? I really don’t want to add more plugins for this, if it’s already possible with my contact form plugin.

We have a website where we want to enable user registration. I’m looking for a plugin that will feature registration on the site’s homepage and work on the woo-commerce store. It should collect data from users like order details and invoices. Please suggest which plugin from your list will fulfill my needs?

Hi, can you recommend a plugin where form registrants can choose a unique username for registration means that the plugin has to check the entered username in the back-end and inform the user if that username is already registered?

  9. Pamila Profile Pic

We have a registration form on our business website with many custom fields, which our visitors may not like. We want to split the registration form into 3 or 4 pages to not appear as a single form with multiple fields. We also want to show different forms to different users on the next pages depending on their submitted information on the form’s first page. Currently, we prefer free plugin options. Is there any free Registration plugin that offers multi-page form functionality?

  10. Kathline Profile Pic

Great article. Straightforward and with lots of useful information. Caldera Forms is my personal favorite WordPress Registration plugin as It supports multi-page forms and conditional logic through the registration form.

userswp[dot]io is what we use and I’m surprised it didn’t make it in your list. The free version is a lot better than most paid versions of the plugins listed on this blog post.
