How To Install the Astra Theme
Astra is a popular WordPress theme known for its speed, simplicity, and flexibility. It’s designed to be lightweight and customizable, making it suitable for a wide range of website projects.
This guide walks you through how to download and install the free version of Astra on your WordPress dashboard.
Installing Astra On Your WordPress Dashboard
To install Astra on your site, follow these steps:
1. Navigate to your WordPress Dashboard.
2. Head over to Appearance > Themes, and click on this Add New Theme button.
3. You can search for the Astra theme through this search bar or upload the theme file directly from your device.
4. Install the Astra theme on your WordPress dashboard.
5. Activate your Astra theme.
Congratulations! Astra has been successfully installed on your website! You’ll now see a new Astra dashboard option available. Access it to begin customizing your newly installed Astra theme.

Installing Astra on WordPress.com
WordPress.com hosted sites can install the Astra theme in one of two ways, depending on the site’s plan.
Requirements
- A WordPress.com site on a paid plan (Personal, Premium, Business, or Commerce)
- Astra theme (free)
Option 1: Upload the Theme File (Available on Personal Plan and Above)
This method works on any paid WordPress.com plan, including Personal and Premium.
- Download the Astra theme .zip file from wordpress.org/themes/astra.
- Log in to the WordPress.com dashboard for the site.
- Go to Appearance → Themes.
- Click Upload Theme.
- Select the downloaded .zip file and upload it.
After completing step 5, click Activate to apply the Astra theme to the site.
Option 2: Install Directly from the Theme Directory (Requires Business Plan or Higher)
Searching for and installing community themes like Astra directly through the WordPress.com theme directory requires the Business or Commerce plan.
- Log in to the WordPress.com dashboard for the site.
- Go to Appearance → Themes.
- Use the search bar to search for Astra.
- Select the Astra theme listing from the search results.
- Click Activate to install and apply Astra directly.
Expected Outcome
The site now uses the Astra theme, and the WordPress.com dashboard shows Astra as the active theme under Appearance → Themes.
Note: On a Personal or Premium plan, the theme directory search does not offer a direct Activate option for Astra, only Business and Commerce plans support installing it that way. Personal and Premium plan users should use the zip upload method (Option 1) instead.
